It was nearly
a month ago when my husband and I traveled to Singapore to celebrate our
anniversary and I’m still wishing we could have spent more time there.
I have to
admit, Singapore is one of the most interesting places we’ve ever been in our
lives, and for a 5-day stay, I felt like we barely scratched the surface of
this country. Sadly, our vacation leaves were limited and so five days was all
we could manage. So, being the OC travel planner that I am, I made sure that
everything was articulately planned so we wouldn’t waste any of our precious
time to discover the country’s captivating beauty.
As you may
have already heard, Singapore is the world’s most expensive
city to live in, leading the Economist Intelligence
Unit’s list for the fifth year in a row. Accommodations are pricier than other
Southeast Asian destinations and cab fares can be more expensive than a plane
ticket.
But,
surprisingly, food is remarkably cheap - and we knew it because our S$10 went a
long way when we tried out a variety of food options from the many food stalls
and hawker centers in the city. We also learned that it’s the only place in the
world where you can buy a Michelin-starred meal for S$2.
However, we
weren’t after the award-winning meal in the city, but the famous restaurant
serving trendy and authentic Korean
cuisine in Singapore, Chi-Bing Restaurant & Cafe.
The restaurant
is just less than 5 km away from the budget hotel we’re staying in, and we
planned to have dinner there the day after we arrive. So, on our second night,
after spending the day visiting Singapore’s most famous destinations, we hopped
again on a train - which, by the way, was a convenient, cost-effective and
relatively fast way to tour around the city - and headed to The Star Vista Mall
where Chi-Bing restaurant is located.
I love a
classic bibimbap (rice dish) and a serving of bingsu (shaved ice dessert), but,
nothing beats my obsession for a decent Korean barbeque. However, for that
night, I was quite intrigued with the restaurant’s specialty - dak galbi or
spicy stir-fried chicken. A quick research on the Internet and I learned that
the dak galbi in this Singapore restaurant is one of the most authentic you’ll
ever taste.
So, I’ve
decided that it’s dak galbi for that night. We had the Chi-Bing Set Menu B,
consisting of hot dak galbi, Injeolmi (rice cake) bingsu and kimchi pancake.
The entire meal was good for 3-4 persons, and it set us back for S$69.70. It
may seem pricey at first, but for the generous servings and delicious entries,
we knew it’s affordable for all it’s worth.
Aside from the
a la carte and set meals, this dak galbi and bingsu-serving
restaurant in Singapore, also
offers eat-all-you-can-eat Korean barbeque buffet for as low as S$22. It
consists of unlimited pork belly barbeque with soybean stew, steamed egg and
steamed rice. There’s also an additional menu where you can order side dishes
like lettuce, king oyster mushroom and more.
As Chi-Bing is located inside a mall, it’s a convenient place for
families and friends to enjoy and catch up - a good place to chill and satisfy
your Korean cuisine craving in Singapore!
